GIANTS Head Coach Kevin Sheedy will help select a team of the greatest VFL-AFL players from the ACT and southern New South Wales over the past 100 years.
Sheedy will head up a panel of selectors to choose the side which will be named at the GIANTS' Grand Final lunch in Canberra in September.
"This is a great way to recognise some of the great players who have hailed from what are now GIANTS zones in the ACT and southern NSW," Sheedy said.
"It is fitting in the centenary of our nation's capital to also recognise the contribution of Australian football in these regions."
Sheedy said the selectors faced a daunting challenge. "From Canberra alone you have names like Alex Jesaulenko, James Hird, Aaron Hamill, Michael Conlan and Craig Bolton.
"Then there are players from NSW such as Wayne Carey, Paul Kelly, John Longmire, Shane Crawford, Billy Brownless, Brett Kirk, Leo Barry, Haydn Bunton and the Daniher brothers who have been great champions of the game.
"I have been lucky to coach some magnificent teams but this will be one of the best and show the depth of talent that has come from these important regions for Australian football."
To be eligible for selection, players must have played 50 games at senior level in either the VFL or AFL. The selection panel will be chaired by Kevin Sheedy and include representatives from the ACT and NSW.
The GIANTS will play the Western Bulldogs for the Prime Minister's Cup at Star Track Oval Canberra this Saturday.
