Greater Western Sydney GIANTS Senior Assistant coach Leon Cameron has described his time working with Kevin Sheedy this season as invaluable.
Cameron has spent the season learning from the master coach before Sheedy hands over the reins as Head Coach at the end of the season.
“Spending this time with Sheeds is invaluable to me,” Cameron said on SEN.
“We have similar thoughts on the game. We can both be quite attacking coaches, we like to take the game on and you’ve seen that with our style of game this year in terms of coming through the corridor a bit more and switching the play a little bit more.”
With Cameron on board as an assistant coach in 2013, the GIANTS have managed to kick bigger scores, have more Inside 50s and have won more contested ball than last season.
“We think similar to each other in terms of that (attacking game style) but there’s no doubt that I’m going to have some different thoughts to Sheeds next year.”
Despite the GIANTS sitting on the bottom of the ladder after 17 rounds, Cameron says the coaches assess the teams performance in ways beyond the win/ loss record.
“Everyone wants to win, everyone loves a winner. But we’re not just judging this season on wins and losses," he said.
“We go on quarters won and a number of other KPIs and we’re ticking along quite nicely in that.
“We would love to win not only one, but we’d love to win a couple in the last six or seven rounds.”
The former Bulldogs and Richmond player says he’s excited with the shape of the GIANTS list looking towards 2014, when he’ll take control of the playing group.
“We’ve got a young list, we’ve retained our list, we’ve developed them and the great thing is we’ve signed up about 95% of our kids which is fantastic for our footy club.
“But it’s time to be active in the trade period at the end of the year in terms of bringing in some mature age players to add value to our current crop of young men.
“In terms of players, our midfield needs a big inside mid to help them through, we need help in the ruck, and we would love another key defender."
