Inaugural GIANTS’ coach Kevin Sheedy will be honoured for his 50 years in football with a gala dinner at the MCG later this month.
Known for his passion and knowledge of the game, Sheedy’s service to football will be recognised by his three clubs, Richmond, Essendon and the GIANTS on Thursday, June 29.
Sheedy coached the GIANTS on 44 occasions between 2012 and 2013, and his influence on the club during its formative years saw the GIANTS club champion award – the Kevin Sheedy Medal – named in his honour.
Involved in seven premierships as a player and coach, Sheedy started his career at Richmond in 1967 where he would play 251 games in yellow and black.
After serving as an assistant coach at Richmond in 1980, Sheedy took over as Essendon’s Head Coach in 1981, leading the Bombers to four premierships in 634 games.
Sheedy guided the GIANTS through their teething years of 2012 and 2013 and instilled a Never Surrender attitude within the playing group.
Sheedy also holds distinction of being named the GIANTS’ first ever Life Member, with his work as an ambassador for football in NSW and the ACT helping spread awareness of the game and the club.
After retiring as head coach at the conclusion of the 2013 season, Sheedy served as a board member from 2014 until the middle of 2015 when he returned to work at Essendon.
