Newly re-signed Cam McCarthy has become something of a cult-figure at the club and it’s not hard to see why.
Sporting blonde flowing hair and a flashy headband, McCarthy certainly stands out among his new teammates.
Even his nickname, Sunshine, refers to a movie character in Remember the Titans with golden locks.
The number 14 pick in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft joined the club over pre-season and this week celebrated his 19th birthday.
McCarthy said his unique hairdo was always a talking point growing up in Western Australia, even from a young age.
“In this picture I was about two-years-old and everyone thought I was a little cutie,” McCarthy said.
“The luscious golden locks have become a bit of a tradition and I’m going to try and hold onto them for as long as I can.
“I had the same hairstyle all the way through school and there was one period where I shaved it off briefly but it just wasn’t for me.
“After that I grew my hair long again and now it’s here to stay.”
McCarthy, known for his his excellent marking ability and big vertical leap, spent his birthday visiting various community events in western Sydney.
“I spent most of the day visiting schools which was good fun and my mum and sister are flying across on Thursday so it will be great to catch up with them,” he said.
McCarthy played his junior footy at South Coogee JFC before being drafted from South Fremantle.
