ROUND 1
GWS GIANTS 15.9 (99) def. Sydney Swans 9.13 (67)
The year started with a bang with the GIANTS defeating their cross-town rivals for the first time.
The game was hit by wild weather in the first term, with the GIANTS surviving a delay in play due to the lightning storm to pull off the greatest victory in their short history, stunning the Swans by 32-points at Spotless Stadium.
The Swans led at every change and held a 24-point advantage in the second term, but the GIANTS never stopped coming and finished full of running for their first victory against their much fancied opponents.
In front of a record crowd of 17,102 at Spotless Stadium, new recruits Shane Mumford, Heath Shaw, Josh Hunt and Dylan Addison made the perfect start to their time at the GIANTS.
Adam Treloar, Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio were magnificent for the home side, while Mumford was immense in the ruck against his old side.
The GIANTS were down by three points at three-quarter time but a stunning six goal final quarter saw Coniglio, Kennedy, Cameron, Frost, Patton and Whitfield all banging home goals to help seal a famous victory for the GIANTS.
