What it means for the GIANTS: A chance to get going again, after a three-month break, and pick up where they left off after three good weeks of training. In case you can’t remember, the GIANTS started their season with a 32-point win over Geelong back in March. Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Toby Greene all started brightly after strong pre-seasons. Draftee Tom Green, having just signed a two-year contract extension, debuted. The GIANTS were the first team to score 100 points against Geelong in 34 games.
Where’s the opposition at? North was a round one winner too, showing real spirit to overcome a 29-point half-time deficit and beat St Kilda by four points. Ben Cunnington, Shaun Higgins and Jy Simpkin were among the better performed players for the Roos, who lost three players to injury before half-time.
The stat: Harry Perryman, having kicked three goals in his first three seasons, booted four in the game against the Cats. For three months he’s been sitting very happily atop the Coleman Medal ladder, alongside Swan Isaac Heeney, Carlton recruit Jack Martin and teammate Greene.
In the mix: Adam Kennedy will be tested, with Tim Taranto (shoulder) and Matt Flynn (knee) still making their way back from long-term injuries. The list is otherwise in good shape. Callan Ward’s hand is well and truly up for a return, more than a year after he went down with his knee injury, and Zac Williams is ready to go after missing the game against the Cats. Youngsters Jye Caldwell, Lachie Ash, and Jackson Hately are among those pushing for a spot in the side after missing out in round one.
In the spotlight: Sam Jacobs. The ruckman made a bright start for the GIANTS in round one, winning 28 hit-outs. The break interrupted the getting-to-know-you process for the former Crow and his new teammates, but the connection between him and his midfielders looked good against the Cats.
