The WSU GIANTS will face the Sydney Swans Reserves in the NEAFL Grand Final next weekend, after defeating Sydney University by 87-points on Saturday.
The 17.15 (117) to 4.6 (30) victory sees the GIANTS head into the clash with the Swans full of confidence, but Brad Miller understands the challenge they face in the club’s maiden NEAFL Grand Final appearance.
“To play the Swans in the grand final is going to be really exciting for our boys,” Miller said.
“We have beaten them twice but this is a different game, it’s a Grand Final so it’s a whole different brand of footy.”
Sydney Uni were held goalless in the first quarter as the GIANTS kicked the first six goals of the match to jump out to an early lead that they would never relinquish.
Despite the eventual 87-point margin the GIANTS’ pressure never let up, with the team laying an impressive 86 tackles.
“Collectively we had 22 contributors which is important going into a final and the scoreboard reflected that,” Miller said.
“Our contested possession was right up and it was just one of those games that we were able to run away with in the end but it was an arm wrestle for most of the game.”
As has been the case all season the GIANTS’ leaders stood up in the big moments, with Rhys Palmer and Jack Steele both at their damaging best.
Palmer finished the match with 35 disposals, 12 tackles, 14 clearances and four goals, while Steele collected 41 touches and kicked one goal.
Once again the GIANTS’ backline stood tall, with Adam Kennedy, Matt Buntine and Tim Mohr restricting the Students to just four goals for the match.
Jeremy Finlayson provided plenty of drive off half-back, with the versatile big man taking 10 marks and collecting 25 possessions in one of his strongest performances this season.
