GIANTS CEO David Matthews says the club supports the AFL’s decision to postpone the 2020 AFL season and cancel the 2020 AFLW season.
The AFL today announced that it would immediately move to suspend the 2020 Toyota AFL Premiership season at the conclusion of this weekend’s matches and conclude the NAB AFL Women’s season as a result of the continuing spread of the Covid-19 virus.
“This is first and foremost a community-wide issue that is impacting everyone, not just the AFL industry,” Mr Matthews said.
“Today’s developments are a reflection of the worsening situation in the community and in response to decisions by Federal and State Governments. Ultimately we will not do anything to compromise the health and well-being of our players and staff.
“We’re clearly hopeful the season can get back under way at a later date but in the meantime we will continue to work closely with the AFL, as we’ve done in recent weeks, to ensure we find a way through this.”
The GIANTS thank their loyal members and fans for their continued understanding and support during these trying times.
While it's disappointing the players can no longer play games at this time, the club acknowledges the wide-spread implications of the Covid-19 virus across all walks of life.
The GIANTS will continue to update members as further information becomes available and we hope everyone stays safe and healthy through this extremely challenging period.
