The GIANTS took their annual AFL Community Camp to bushfire-affected regions in the Riverina and South Coast as the bushfire-recovery relief effort continues.
Following on from the weekend’s Festival of Footy in Wagga Wagga, GIANTS AFL players spread throughout the region to visit schools, hospitals, a zoo and a number of properties to do their bit in helping the recovery.
Jacob Hopper went back to his old stomping ground in Leeton and Narrandera alongside Jye Caldwell, while Connor Idun and Tommy Sheridan visited schools and properties around Nowra.
A large group of players, comprising Sam Jacobs, Matt Buntine, Matt de Boer, Sam Taylor, Lachie Ash, Jackson Hately, Daniel Lloyd and Adam Kennedy visited the Tumbarumba and Batlow areas, helping to clear bushfire-affected properties, visit schools, Sugar Pine Walk and the local Rural Fire Service.
“To be able to have our community camp out here in the Riverina area, it’s great to come out and see first-hand the devastation people have been through,” Jacobs said.
“It’s pretty confronting. We live in a city and footy is our world, but to come out here, this is people’s livelihood, this is what they do every day. To see it getting taken away in such horrific ways is really shattering.
“It’s nice that we can come out here – if it’s footy, we can bring people together and it’s nice to be able to have a platform to put smiles on people’s faces.
“It may only be something small, but to just come out and give a little bit of a hand as well is great.”
The GIANTS also visited the Merimbula, Moruya, Temora, Wagga Wagga and Griffith areas as part of the visits.
