GIANTS recruit Annalyse Lister has opened up on her motivation for choosing jumper number 14.
Speaking on the GIANTS TV series Monday, Lister, who debuted for the GIANTS in the round-one win over Gold Coast, told GIANTS TV that it is a tribute to her late father.
“My dad passed away in May last year from a GBM brain tumor,” Lister said.
“So when I had the choice of a number I spoke to Brianna (Harvey, Head of AFLW and Academies) and she happened to organise number 14, which is dad’s birthday.
“It’s a really special number to me and it’s something that I’m hoping to make something of.
“I’m hoping to give him a bit of a legacy.”
Lister was candid in the six-minute long video and admitted that her dad was the one who pushed her to chase her AFL Women’s dream.
The 29-year-old, who hails from Perth, was inspired to take up the sport after watching the first season of AFLW.
“I grew up playing hockey, I always really enjoyed it,” Lister said.
“I remember watching the first season of AFLW and wanting to give it a crack to see how I’d go.
“I remember having a conversation with my dad and I think his words were something along the lines of, ‘Well, you’re probably never going to play for the Hockeyroos, so why not give it a go?’.
“As harsh as that may seem it was probably pretty fair advice and I gave it a crack that year.”
