GWS GIANTS National List and Recruitment Manager Stephen Silvagni has described today as being like ‘Christmas Eve’ as the AFL’s youngest club gears up for tonight’s NAB AFL Draft.
With eleven of the first fourteen picks, the GIANTS are in an exciting and unique situation.
Silvagni told a massive media contingent at SKODA Stadium today that he is excited to see the culmination of all of the recruiting department’s hard work tonight when the full GIANTS squad comes together for the first time.
“To be able to have so many selections, particularly the early ones, with 11 of the top 14, makes this a very special day for the club.
“The recruiting department at GWS has worked really hard and it’s the climax tonight of all the hard work.
“The position that we’re in to have 11 of the top 14 is a unique position to be in so we hope to get a number of really good players through the door.
“There is a lot of pressures in football, no matter what position you are in but we’re really excited. We’ve done the hard work and tonight is about picking the players that are best suited to our football club.
Silvagni said that the selection of this year’s number one draft pick has been made based on who the club considers the best football player but didn’t give any indication of who that player will be.
“With the prestige of being a number one draft pick, you do need to make sure that you pick the best player.
“We are in the unique position where we do hold the top five picks but we’ll certainly pick that player based on who we think is number one.
“It’s a bit like Christmas Eve tonight; we don’t want to spoil the surprise.
“The bulk of the players that we select tonight are going to be playing over a hundred games here at SKODA Stadium. It’s going to be a fantastic facility and the AFL and we as a club have worked really hard to ensure that we’re going to survive in this competition for a long time.”
