It was the day before Harry Miell’s big school assignment was due and he hadn’t started.
The 15-year-old from South Australia was running out of time and decided to take a chance on a long shot - Interviewing the coach of the GWS GIANTS.
One hour later his phone rang. It was Leon Cameron on the other end.
“I may have let a swear word slip by accident when Leon called, but I just couldn’t hide my surprise,” Harry told GIANTS Media.
The assignment required students to interview someone currently working in their dream job.
Being a big GIANTS fan, Harry contacted the club and explained his predicament.
“Leon rang me on his way home from the club and we spoke for about 25 minutes,” Harry said.
“We spoke about everything from coaching to footy to life in general. He really is a great bloke.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would actually go out of his way to help me so I can’t thank him enough.
“You should have seen the look on my teacher’s face when I told them the story and submitted the project on time.”
Today, almost three months after that phone call, Harry met Leon Cameron in person at the GIANTS’ training session at Adelaide Oval.
The pair chatted and talked tactics ahead of the GIANTS clash with Port Adelaide tomorrow.
“We had a bit of a giggle because to be honest I want Leon’s job,” Harry said.
“He gave me some great advice and now hopefully I’ve got my foot in the door.
“Even though we spoke on the phone I was still star-struck meeting him in person.”
Harry plans to undergo a coaching course next year to get the ball rolling on his dream.
He managed a B+ on his assignment. His best result to date.
