Katich Pulls Up Stumps
GIANTS Player Development Coordinator Simon Katich has retired from Twenty20 cricket, ending his illustrious playing career.
Katich played 56 Test matches for Australia, scoring 4188 runs at an average of 45.03 including 10 centuries, as well as representing Australia in 45 ODI’s and three T20 international matches.
He also led the Perth Scorchers to the Big Bash title earlier this year.
The 38-year old joined the GIANTS late last year as Player Development Coordinator and team runner on match days, and will continue in this role.
With the birth of his second son due in just over a month, Katich says the time is right to retire from all forms of the game.
“It’s always difficult when it comes to making these sort of decisions,” said Katich.
"I have a young family, I've had a great run and for my last game at the WACA, my home ground, to be a win in a successful campaign is the stuff you dream of.”
"I'll finish on a high and that was a big part of the reason I decided to pull up stumps."
GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews congratulated Katich on his decorated career.
"Simon has enjoyed a magnificent career and earned the respect of many people around the world for his professionalism, integrity and leadership.
"We have been delighted with what he has done since he joined the GIANTS where he has helped mentor our young players and develop their leadership skills and we look forward to him continuing to make a significant contribution to the club into the future," he said.
