The WSU GIANTS have earned themselves a week off in the first round of the NEAFL finals, after easily accounting for the Brisbane Lions Reserves by 139-points.

NEAFL coach Brad Miller was pleased with his side’s effort throughout the 28.17 (185) to 7.4 (46) victory, with the GIANTS’ laying 49 tackles in the first half alone.

“It was just a real four-quarter effort,” he said.

“The guys started well and our tackle pressure was great all day.”

The GIANTS looked dangerous every time they went forward, with the midfield able to hit their targets inside 50 at will and allowing the forwards to boot 14 goals in each half of the big win.

James Stewart was a constant headache for the Lions’ defence, with the tall forward taking 14 marks and kicking eight goals to finish the season as the team’s leading goal kicker with 45.

Rhys Palmer continued his impressive run of form, collecting 36 possessions, kicking six goals and laying eight tackles in a complete performance.

“James provided a terrific option for us all day,” Miller said.

“Across the board our forwards struck the balance between when to lead up and when to get the ball in deep.”

The 139-point win is the third consecutive game the WSU GIANTS’ have won by over 100 points and Brad Miller highlighted the performance of the backline that featured Harry Himmelberg, Adam Kennedy and Matt Buntine.

“They are a really solid back six, their leadership is really important and they set up how we move the ball,” Miller said.

“For them to be able to contribute the way they did even though we were dominating the game is a credit to them.”

Defender Tim Mohr showed that he can have an impact at both ends of the ground kicking two goals in the last quarter, much to the delight of his teammates.

“It’s good to see stuff like that, the boys really got around him and he’s a really popular member of the team.” Miller said.

The WSU GIANTS will face the winner of the Sydney University and Gold Coast Suns Reserves elimination final in a home semi-final on Saturday, September 3.
