Midfielder Stephen Coniglio is developing into a strong leader, both on and off the footy field.

Coniglio had the privilege of captaining the GIANTS in their first NAB Challenge fixture against the Western Bulldogs last Thursday night.

Three days later, the 22-year-old gave up his time to inspire the next generation as part of the Stephen Coniglio Talent Camp which aims to identify and develop up-and-coming athletes from multicultural backgrounds.

Sixteen young school students attended the two-day camp at the Redfern National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, after being selected from more than 150 candidates. 

Coniglio, who is entering his third season as an AFL Australia Post Multicultural Ambassador, said the camp gave kids an opportunity to improve their skill and knowledge.

“I was really impressed with the standard of skill, considering some of these boys are only just learning the sport,” Coniglio said.

“They were all very respectful and keen to get better so ideally it would be great to see one or two playing for the GIANTS one day. 

“Hopefully they can take something away from the experience and continue to grow as footballers.”

Coniglio took the group for a skill session, with a focus on kicking and cardio training.

Attendees also focused on AFL rules, game play and the dedication required to be a professional footballer.

The group of sixteen young footballers will test out their skill next month playing for AFL NSW/ACTs All Nations Team at the National Diversity Championships in Townsville.
