In the lead up to the 2017 NAB AFL Draft being held in Sydney, we’re taking a look back at some of the GIANTS Then and Now ahead of the next batch walking into the club.
Harry Himmelberg
Pick 16, 2015 NAB AFL Draft
Before the draft
"He's a lovely, rangy-sized kid, about 192 [centimetres tall], but that ability to get off his man with a burst of speed, presents really well, got lovely soft hands. He's one that is capable of following Jack Steele and being a draftee at the end of the year. He's your best prospect on what he's shown this year, he's a genuine prospect." - AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan.
“A key forward with plenty of X-factor, Himmelberg loves to lead up at the ball and has fantastic mobility. Himmelberg played at under-18 level for NSW/ACT and was best on ground for the Allies against the NAB AFL Academy side on Grand Final Day last year.” - AFL Record season guide 2016.
His first day at the club
“I was rapt to see Harry join the club as I’d had a bit to do with him in his NEAFL year when he was overlooked in the draft.”
“When he walked into the club, he just had this likable nature that saw everyone warm to him. He had an ability to kick the footy and see things that the players started to respect. And he was a bit alternative which the players liked too.” – Brett Hand, GIANTS Head of Development and Welfare.
The two years since
After making his debut in 2016, Himmelberg enjoyed a breakout year in 2017, playing 12 games as a defender, forward and part time ruck.
The 21-year-old emerged as one of the GIANTS’ most exciting prospects late in the season and was one of the club’s best performers in their finals series.
His four goal haul in the Preliminary Final against Richmond in front of a packed MCG showed just what he is capable of on the big stage.
