Co-captain Callan Ward has undergone a knee reconstruction in Melbourne on Tuesday with the inaugural skipper to miss the remainder of the season.
Ward stayed in Melbourne following the injury in the first quarter of Saturday’s win over Geelong and with the swelling having subsided, he went in for a traditional knee reconstruction with Dr Julian Feller on Tuesday afternoon.
“He’s gone in for a knee reconstruction today, there was a little bit of other damage in there,” GIANTS General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell said.

“We’re really confident the operation will go well and he’ll get back into his rehab. Knowing him, he’ll attack it full-on and he’ll play round one next year.”
Toby Greene will spend another week on the sideline as he builds his training loads back up following calf tightness after round one with Campbell confident the star forward will feature next round.
“He’s completed a really good block of training,” Campbell said.
“He won’t play him this week, we’ll get another week’s training under his belt.
“We thought we did that going into round one … but we want to be conservative with him, he’s a really important player for us.
“He won’t play this week but all things being equal, he’ll be a definite for the Swans the week after that.”
Draftee Ian “Bobby” Hill will play his first game in GIANTS colours when he takes to the field in the NEAFL at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday with the enigmatic forward cleared to play following a shoulder injury last year.
“He’ll play this week which is exciting,” Campbell said.
“He came to us with a shoulder reconstruction and the guys have done a really good job with him to get him up and running.
"He’s been showing some exciting glimpses at training so we’re looking forward to him playing some NEAFL time this weekend.”
Isaac Cumming (concussion) and Dylan Buckley (back) both failed to finish the game in the NEAFL last Saturday however the pair are expected to be cleared to play this weekend.
