GIANTS fans are invited to thank one of the most influential and respected figures in the club’s history this weekend, with retired inaugural GIANTS co-captain Phil Davis to be honoured at Saturday’s home game against the Kangaroos.

Playing 192 games across the GIANTS and the Crows, Davis called time on his fantastic career at the end of last season following 15 seasons at the elite level.

Joining the club from Adelaide as a 21-year-old following 18 games with the Crows, the gutsy key defender was named one of the GIANTS’ inaugural co-captains and quickly established himself as one of the competition’s best young leaders.

Captaining the club for eight out of the 12 years spent in orange and charcoal, Davis has left an immeasurable mark on the GIANTS after playing a crucial role in laying the foundations of the club since his arrival in late 2011.

Davis, who features in a soon-to-be-released GIANTS media documentary focusing on his career – will be honoured on Saturday as the GIANTS host the Kangaroos at 4:35pm at ENGIE Stadium.

Members of the Orange Army are encouraged to head along on Saturday to thank and farewell the proud lifelong GIANT.

As part of the tribute, the 33-year-old will give fans the opportunity for photos and autographs before the game before we hear from the former star defender on field at half time as he makes his way along the boundary in front of the Members Stand.

GIANTS CEO David Matthews acknowledged the huge contribution Davis has made to the GIANTS.

“Phil’s contribution to the club is hard to put into words,” Mr Matthews said.

“Being named an inaugural captain of an AFL club is no easy task and from the get-go Phil showed through his character and his talent that we could not have chosen a better person to help lead the club.

“From day one we needed strong people to set an example and build a great culture at the club, and along with the help of Callan Ward, Phil did just that to an extremely high standard.

“As well as his leadership and his ability to galvanise the group, we should never underestimate the high quality of football Phil played. Having gone toe to toe with the best key forwards of this generation- and often beating them- his talent and especially courage can never be doubted after coming back from a life-threatening kidney injury.

“Saturday provides us a great opportunity to thank Phil for everything he’s done for the club and we hope to see the Orange Army as its strongest on Saturday to honour a legend of the GIANTS.”
