Three-time AFL premiership forward Cameron Mooney will assist the GIANTS in 2024, working with the club in an advisory role.
Mooney, who won a premiership with North Melbourne in 1999 before claiming two more flags with Geelong in 2007 and 2009, will visit the club at various points throughout the season to provide specialist coaching to the GIANTS’ key position players.
Mooney played 221 games for the Kangaroos and the Cats across 15 seasons and was a two-time Geelong leading goalkicker, both in premiership years, as well as an All Australian in 2007.
Mooney moved into the media following his retirement in 2011 and has since been a commentator for Fox Footy as well as a panellist on Bounce.
“Day one has been a lot of fun,” Mooney said after his first official day at the club on Friday.
“It’s the first time I’ve been in the facilities, which I love.”
The hulking former key forward put some of the GIANTS’ key forwards through their paces, a tiring task according to the former Geelong champion.
“I had to go in for a cold bath [afterwards] because my legs were killing me because I did a lot of one-on-one stuff with a lot of the big boys,” he laughed.
“I thought I was 22 again, not 43, it was ridiculous.”
Mooney was quick to heap praise following the gruelling session.
“They were fantastic today… they were so enthusiastic and got involved and were helping each other and I was extremely impressed with the way they went about it which made my job a lot easier,” he said.
“You never know coming into these roles how you’re going to be received or how it’s going to go, and I walk away today extremely happy.”
Asked which GIANTS impressed him the most, Mooney gave kudos to an evergreen veteran and an underrated key cog in the GIANTS’ machine.
“Jesse [Hogan] is looking really fit and strong, he rag dolled me a couple of times to be honest.
And ‘Browny’ [Callum Brown] is looking fantastic, he’s really strong.
“I know he’s still learning the game, being an Irish kid, but his ability to throw me out of the way, his strength, his body and his timing, I was extremely impressed with what he did today.”
GIANTS Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said he’s thrilled to add Mooney’s expertise to the club’s coaching group.
“Cam brings a wealth of knowledge after 15 years playing at the top level and we are excited about the wisdom he can pass on to our players, particularly our key position forwards, as well as our rucks,” McCartney said.
“He knows what it takes to be successful at this level, having won three premierships in his playing days, and it’s great to be able to add someone of his calibre to our environment.”
The GIANTS have also added long-time Richmond analyst Jack Harvey to their ranks and as well as experienced strength and conditioning coach Andrew Rondinelli.
Harvey, who spent over 10 years at the Tigers, is the club’s new Opposition and Player Analyst while Rondinelli has been appointed as Senior Physical Performance Coach, having previously worked with Port Adelaide as well as in the NRL and the A-League.
