This Saturday’s NAB Cup match against the Gold Coast Suns at Lavington will have extra meaning for some GIANTS players.

For New South Wales zone selection players like Howlong’s Anthony Miles it will be something of a homecoming.

“I played with the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup and with the NSW ACT RAMS. Because of the concessions that have been given to the GIANTS as a new club, I was lucky enough to be selected before the draft because I was born in NSW,” Miles said.

“I made the decision to not go in to the draft and was picked up as a NSW zone pick when I was 17. For me it was the chance to start at a new club, which was really exciting.

“I came up to Sydney and had a look at the facilities and met the people that were already involved with the club and it was a no brainer really.”

Miles will be cheered on by his family and friends when he runs out on Saturday night and said that while he is excited to be heading home, his main focus is the SUNS.

“After playing in the NEAFL last year, we’re still coming to terms with the fact that we’re in the AFL this year. Any chance we’ve got at playing another AFL side before round 1 is pretty exciting.

“Mum and Dad, my two brothers, sister in law and my two nieces are coming down on the weekend.

“All my family is starting to get pretty excited about it. I’ve just got to put that at the back of my mind and prepare for the game ahead.

“Gold Coast will be another big challenge for us, they’re at a similar stage to us with a lot of young guys.

“It would be great for us to get our first win this week. We’ve come close a few times and been competitive but at the end of the day, we want to win.”

Miles said the senior players at the club have been invaluable to the younger GIANTS and their commitment is something for the whole group to aspire to.

“It’s extremely helpful and exciting to learn from guys like Callan Ward and James McDonald.

“Their intensity is amazing, they attack every session and give 100% every single time they play.”
