When and Where:
Sunday, May 21 at 4:40pm
Wangal Country | GIANTS Stadium
What it Means for the GIANTS:
After winning three of Adam Kingsley's first nine games in charge – the GIANTS now sit in the bottom four at 3-6, with Sunday’s clash against St Kilda at GIANTS Stadium the perfect opportunity to bounce back in front of a home crowd.
Last Time We Met:
St Kilda stood up under the bright lights of Friday night football and grounded out a 17-point win in Canberra, in round six last year. The GIANTS piled on the pressure in the final quarter, but the Saints were able to hold on to emerge victorious in the 8.12 (60) to 10.17 (77) contest. Ruck Braydon Preuss was amongst the GIANTS’ best, amassing 47 hit-outs, 13 disposals and a goal.
Where’s the opposition at?
The Saints will visit GIANTS Stadium on Sunday sitting fifth on the ladder with six wins and three losses. Their most recent loss came in round nine, with the 52-point deficit the Saints’ biggest losing margin of the season. Forward Tim Membrey will remain in Victoria after suffering a concussion during the third term, but the Saints remain hopeful Max King will tick the necessary boxes to make his return from injury. Jade Gresham will also be in the frame for a recall after being withdrawn following a knee complaint. Former GIANT Jack Steele finished the match with ice on his knee following a "tweak", however is expected to be available this weekend.
GIANTS Player to Watch:
Jesse Hogan continues to prove to be one of the shrewdest trades the GIANTS have brokered to date. The former Demon and Docker cost the GIANTS just pick No. 54 at the end of 2020. After booting 35 goals from 18 games last year – after 20 from nine in 2021 – Hogan now has 19 from the first nine rounds of 2023 after kicking three goals at the MCG on Sunday night. The West Australian has kicked multiple goals in 27 of his 36 games in the Orange and Charcoal.
In the Mix:
Toby Greene is set to make his return for the GIANTS this weekend. The superstar forward - who is two games away from the 200-game milestone - has missed the past two matches with an ankle injury suffered in the GIANTS’ win over Sydney at the SCG. Defender Isaac Cumming will be sidelined until the mid-season bye with a calf injury sustained last week. Lachlan Keeffe (thumb) and Jason Gillbee (calf) returned to the field in the VFL’s thrilling win over Collingwood on Sunday afternoon. Jake Riccardi, Kieren Briggs, Phil Davis, Wade Derksen and Harry Rowston will all be in contention after also impressing in the VFL.
