The GIANTS take on Hawthorn in Round 8 on Sunday, October 16 as part of AFLW Pride Round in season seven.
Revealed on Tuesday, the players will wear an evolution of last season’s pride jumper, combining the colours of the Pride Progress Flag within the GIANTS’ iconic ‘G’.
Pride Round acknowledges and celebrates inclusivity for LGBTQI+ people and their allies within the football community.
For GIANTS captain Alicia Eva, the round is a significant celebration.
“It’s a really important round, it’s special and fun and a celebratory round for the LGBTQI+ community, many of whom make up the wonderful diverse AFLW cohort and our supporter base,” she said.
“Our game is not just for big, small, fast, slow – they’re what we celebrate in our athletes. But our game extends far beyond the footy field, it impacts the community, it impacts social change, it impacts so many things.
“To be really visible and proudly wear the rainbow flag and the trans flag, it’s really important to say ‘celebrate you, be proud of who you are, enjoy the ride, enjoy being who you are’ and we’re going to do that in a fun way by playing footy on the weekend.”
Head of Women’s Football at the GIANTS, Briana Harvey, reflects on the welcoming nature of women’s football.
“Women’s footy and sport in general has always been a welcoming space because historically sport was always very male-dominated,” Harvey said.
“By being in that environment, women banded together, and that was why you could come in and be yourself because playing sport was something that was already seen as ‘wrong’ in the first place.
“Pride Round is an opportunity to celebrate diversity - and show respect to a minority group that has been marginalised and still is in some walks of life.
“It’s important to showcase as the AFL community is not just saying you are included but actually doing something that shows you are.”
The GIANTS will host Hawthorn this Sunday, October 16 at 3.10pm at Henson Park to celebrate Pride Round.
