The GIANTS hosted more than 200 Diabetic children as part of DiaBuddies Day at Tom Wills Oval on Saturday.

DiaBuddies Day is an annual event which celebrates children living with Type 1 diabetes along with their families, friends and carers.

There was a host of fun activations including the GIANTS’ Fan Zone, face painting, cooking classes and magic show.

The event is run by Diabetes NSW, one of the GIANTS’ inaugural community partners.

GIANTS rookie and Type 1 diabetic Sam Reid said he is proud to support DiaBuddies Day given his background with the disease.

“It’s important these kids understand that having diabetes isn’t something that should change their way of life,” Reid said.

“I first realised I had the condition in 2009 when I lost 15kg and was sent for blood tests while playing at the Western Bulldogs.

“It was a big shock at first and being a professional footballer you automatically think the worst but now it’s something I’ve gotten used to.

“There’s a lot of support around and Diabetes NSW do some great work in the community.”

Reid has two tattoos which serve as constant reminders of his condition - A dartboard on his stomach to inject insulin and the words “Type 1 Diabetes” on his right wrist.

The purpose of DiaBuddies Day is to give people an opportunity to meet others living with diabetes to establish a genuine local support network.
