The storied career of one of the decade’s most consistent ruckmen will come to an end, with Shane Mumford to finish up after 13 seasons at the elite level.
Mumford comes off the GIANTS’ list for the second time, after initially finishing up at the end of the 2017 season with a foot injury.
After a season off, Mumford went on to play another 44 games across the past three seasons, including the 2019 Grand Final.
The 35-year-old, who hails from Bunyip in regional Victoria, was drafted at pick 57 in the 2007 Rookie Draft by Geelong and played 21 games across two seasons in the hoops.
After moving to the Swans, Mumford played 79 games in the red and white across four seasons, including the 2012 Premiership.
He moved cross-town to the GIANTS ahead of the 2014 season, playing 116 games with the club as well as winning the Kevin Sheedy Medal in his first season.
He also won the club’s GIANTS Standards Award on three occasions - in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
GIANTS General Manager of Football Jason McCartney paid tribute to Mumford.
“Over 200 AFL games in the physical manner and the position in which Shane played is a wonderful achievement,” McCartney said
“From the rookie list to 13 seasons at the elite level, including a premiership, Shane has achieved a lot in his career.
“He arrived at our club in just our third season, and he has had a monumental impact on our club.
“We’re pleased Shane, Eva, Ollie and Theo will remain part of the GIANTS family as Shane takes up a ruck coaching role with the club as well as working across the Academy and with the club’s partners and coterie groups.
“Our young rucks have already learned so much from Shane and they’ll continue to flourish under his tutelage in future seasons.”
Mumford said he reflected on his career with pride.
“My time on the football field has come to an end for now,” Mumford said.
“I’m incredibly proud of all that I’ve achieved across my career in the game including winning the ultimate, a premiership, in 2012.
“I’m looking forward to remaining at the club and continuing to coach and mentor our promising ruck division.”
