A key member of the GIANTS’ backline, Himmelberg is a highflying tall key defender capable of also playing on smaller opponents. Originally a mobile tall forward and a member of the GIANTS Academy, Himmelberg was a regular top-up player for the GIANTS’ NEAFL side in his draft year before being taken as a first-round selection by the club in the 2015 AFL Draft. He was originally utilised as a forward in his early years at the club, most notably kicking four goals in a preliminary final in 2017. Despite sitting as the GIANTS’ third all-time leading goalkicker, with 161 majors, Himmelberg has since established himself as a star down back after being moved to defence in the middle of the 2022 season. With a great ability to read the play, as well as being a very capable one-on-one defender, the young swingman has cemented himself as an integral part of the GIANTS’ backline. Becoming known for his high-flying antics, Himmelberg won the 2023 AFL Mark of the Year for a monster grab against Adelaide in round one. In 2024 he played in all 25 games for the GIANTS to further cement himself as an important player in Adam Kingsley’s side. Himmelberg will remain a GIANT until at least the end of the 2029 season after turning his back on free agency to sign a huge six-year deal in the middle of the 2023 campaign.
