After a strong opening quarter, the GIANTS - with twelve AFL listed players - were overrun by Werribee in Round 10 of the VFL.

James Peatling (27 disposals, 9 marks), Matt Buntine (24 disposals, 4 tackles) and Angus Baker (31 disposals, 10 marks) impressed for the GIANTS, but it wasn't enough as the GIANTS fell to a 15.8 (90) to 7.8 (50) defeat at Avalon Airport Oval. 

“We clearly had a good first quarter, especially around the contest," said GIANTS VFL coach Luke Kelly.

"We started well which flowed into some really promising pieces of play but after quarter time we went away from playing our brand of football. 

"Overall, I was pleased with with the attitude, and pleased with our effort, but our execution of the fundamentals and our gameplay has to be more consistent."

Callum Brown

"Callum had some really good moments throughout the contest. We know when he's on defensively he's very hard to beat. Again, like a few of our other guys his execution and concentration is a big improvement."

Tanner Bruhn

"Tanner started really well. His inside work at stoppages is clearly a strength which is why they ended up having someone run with him in the second half. He'll take some good learnings out of that, and how to how to keep making an impact with that sort of attention."

Matt Buntine

"Along with Baker, Matt was probably one of our best down back. His consistency was fantastic and as one of our experienced players he was influential in terms of showing how to approach the game and how to consistently have an impact."

He's nailing his role within the team and week by week he continues to add facets of his game that are going to hold him in good steed when he transitions to the next level. Really pleased with the not only the consistency of his performance but his ability to keep improving as well."

Jake Stein

"Jake had the match up against (Wylie) Buzza and I thought it was a really good, even contest. He fought hard against a really strong forward, apart from a couple of lapses I thought he was really consistent."

"A good return after not much football of late, he competed hard for the four quarters, needed the run and will be better for it next week." 

Xavier O'Halloran

"Never dropped his work rate, he had 15 contested possessions, 7 tackles and 8 clearances. He'll continue to work on having an impact with ball in hand and didn't really get the reward for the work he did inside."

"Another really strong performance from JP, he's stetted really well. Off the back of his defence he starts to bring his offence out which is a reason why they had someone go with him which again, is a good learning curve for him."

"Played on a really good defender in (Nathan) Cooper. He had to work hard for his possessions and his goals. Little bit like the team he fluctuated with the good and then went away from a couple of things we need to keep seeing from him, but overall a really good hit out for him."

"Split his time between the wing and half forward, again his defensive work and his selflessness is a real positive every week. He's continuing to learn the game and the offensive side of it."

Angus Baker

"Probably our best on ground due to his consistency throughout the contest. It was only his second game with us but he's slotted in and is understanding our system well. His ability to defend and stay in the contest allows his offence to come to the fore, so really pleased with him."

Xavier Barry-Murphy

"Definitely his best game for us so far. It's been a learning process out on the wing for him, but each week he comes with the attitude to learn and get better and now he's starting to reap the rewards from that."

Leyton Chisholm

"We didn't go into the game with a recognised number one ruck, but he's got a big engine that he put to use in the forward line before going into the ruck and competing really hard against a really good ruckman. He played his role for the team which was exactly what we were after." 

Blake Reid

"A late inclusion as a lot of our boys couldn't travel, Blake slotted straight in which is what we loved to see. Really impressed with his defensive work."

"We love his contested work around the ball, his defensive work against a fast paced midfield is an area we will continue to work on."

Rhys Pollock

"Rhys is a model of consistency for us, we know what we get every week from him, which is what we love. He's got that high work rate as a small forward and gets up and gets back to help out defensively."

Alex Smout

"Smout's moved inside the last couple of weeks. He adds maturity around the ball and definitely adds a layer of work rate to our offensive side. The defensive side of his game is an area he needs to continue to learn and invest in to really round out his game as a midfielder."

"For a young kid to hook in the way he did against an experienced ruck was a great learning curve for him. I thought he presented himself well in terms of his contest, he competed his heart out for the whole game. He had some great moments around the ball and he will only continue to improve."

"He's getting better and better every week. His work rate continues to go to another level and he's starting to get the reward off the back of it. We're starting to really see his offensive ability which is reflected in his ability to hit the scoreboard."
