Greater Western Sydney GIANTS Senior Assistant Coach Leon Cameron has revealed number one draft pick Lachie Whitfield will be among a number of debutants to be unveiled in the 2013 NAB Cup.
The GIANTS will take on last year's AFL premiers the Sydney Swans and Carlton in the first round of the NAB Cup at Blacktown International Sportspark on Sunday.
Cameron said Whitfield, touted as one of the most exciting young midfielders in recent years, had fitted in well since arriving at the club in November and had trained well throughout the pre-season.
“He [Lachie] is going to be rolling out with the GIANTS for his first game this week, it’s fantastic," Cameron said.
"All our new draftees this year have fitted in really really well and there’s probably going to be ... three or four debutants from our draft that has just gone.
“Lachie is one of those lads and his professionalism, the way he moves and the way he has settled in Sydney has just been fantastic and we couldn’t be more impressed.
“I am really wrapped with the way Lachie is going, and it is going to take a couple of years to mature in terms of size."
Cameron, who joined the club last October and will succeed Kevin Sheedy in 2014, said the club was looking forward to taking on their cross town rivals in a preview of their Round 1 clash against the Swans at ANZ Stadium.
“Any opportunity you’re looking to get up on your local rivals, and the Swans have been such a fantastic footy club and we’re hoping the rivalry just keeps building and building and building."
Another GIANT who will be pulling on his boots on Sunday is former Blue Setanta O'hAilpin who tore his ACL against Carlton in Round 6 2012 and will return from his long road to recovery in Blacktown.
“Setanta is full of energy, he has been fantastic, and he’s only been here for 15 months, but it is like he has been here for ten years," Cameron said.
"It is great to see him out there, he’s enthusiastic, he’ll help Johnny Patton, he’ll help Jeremy Cameron, he’ll help Adam Tomlinson and all our young forwards just because of his energy."
