The GIANTS went down to the Adelaide Crows by 20 points in a practice match at Norwood Oval in Adelaide on Sunday.
From Sydney to Albury, to Canberra, to Adelaide, the side were relieved to finally get back to business and play some footy.
It was a slow start and low-scoring affair for the GIANTS, with Erin Todd and Elle Bennetts the two players to score a major.
With 26 players rotating through and seven new players on the brink of a debut, two of the line coaches have given an insight into the players’ practice match performance and how they’re tracking ahead of round one.
Player by Player Summary by Jon Vlatko and Cameron Bernasconi
Emily Goodsir (#1)
“Em played predominantly throughout the midfield, was solid around the ball and did her usual ‘Em Goodsir’ chase down and tackling.”
Alicia Eva (#2)
“Got plenty of footy and as usual showed strong leadership and direction throughout the game.”
Alyce Parker (#3)
“Won a lot of her own ball and surged well into attack. Didn’t get many opportunities to hit the scoreboard.”
Jodie Hicks (#5)
“It was a tough day for the forwards and ‘Hicksy’ was another one starved of opportunities playing forward.”
Rebecca Beeson (#6)
“She gets herself in good positions to win the ball and always remains busy in the game.”
Jessica Dal Pos (#7)
“She found a lot of footy and did some good things with ball in hand and stood up as one of our leaders.”
Nicola Barr (#8)
“Good game on the wing. Work rate and running patterns up and down the ground showcased her high fitness level.”
Tanya Hetheringon (#9)
“She was solid down back. Contested well in the air and didn’t lose many contests.”
Aimee Schmidt (#11)
“Jumped at the ball and presented well, but another forward that was starved of opportunity.”
Cora Staunton (#13)
“Despite an interrupted pre-season Cora surged the ball really well and pushed deep up the ground to win ball. She gained long metres up the ground with her kicking and was good to see the competitiveness still there.”
Annalyse Lister (#14)
“Lister had good starting points playing down back. Rarely got beaten and competed hard for four quarters.”
Bríd Stack (#15)
“Bríd had a fantastic start to AFL. She read the cues to come off her opponent well, to provide offence but always defend. Very raw to the game but shaping up to be a good player.”
Bríd Stack Injury Update: Stack has been released from hospital but is set to be sidelined following an incident in a tackle during Sunday's practice match.
Taylah Davies (#16)
“Tay has improved out of sight. She looks a lot more balanced and calmer on the field and rotated throughout not only the forward line, but the wing and midfield today.”
Georgia Garnett (#17)
“She started up in defence before she was rotated up forward, which she was excited about. Had good leading patterns and presented well – provides another option to be rotated forward.”
Tarni Evans (#18)
“Showing good signs early – very clean for a young player. She was rotated throughout the field during the match and finds space well.”
Rebecca Privitelli (#19)
“She’s in good condition - presented well and was up and about. Priv sets the bar in terms of trying to get in good spots. She’s showing good signs again that she’s going to be one of our top marking players again.”
Lisa Steane (#20)
“Covered the ground really well as she played throughout the wing, defence and forward. Hunts the ball and the play really well. Very competitive and doesn’t like to lose a one-on-one.”
Pepa Randall (#21)
“Really strong down back today. Played the anchor role. Didn’t get beaten one-on-one.”
Elle Bennetts (#22)
“Read the play very well. Knows when to come off her opponent at the right time. One of only two players to hit the scoreboard.”
Erin McKinnon (#23)
“Presented well. Definitely showing a lot of presence as the tallest player out there. Rucked well. Looking forward to her having a big year.”
Haneen Zreika (#24)
“Haneen played mid for most of the day and injected her high intensity tackling into the game. Her second and third efforts were really good.”
Erin Todd (#27)
“Probably the loudest player out on the whole field. You can see she has come from a high-level sports background. Good debut at this level and first goal scorer.”
Sarah Halvorsen (#30)
“Played throughout the ruck and forward and with her speed, she covers the ground really well. Presented well up front for the midfielders and competed well in the ruck not making it easy for the opposition.”
Tait Mackrill (#32)
“Started well in the forward line today. Looking forward to seeing her take her game to the next level as a consistent midfielder; she’s got elite kicking and her kicking was sound again today.”
Emily Pease (#33)
“The practice match was Em’s first game for the club. She competed well but still has a lot to learn. An exciting young prospect for the club.”
Libby Graham (#37)
“Another first-gamer for the club. Libby defended well and had a few strong spoils.”
