After a tough hit out against Hawthorn on Saturday, the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS hit the track today to complete their team recovery and begin their preparation for next week’s match against the Gold Coast SUNS in Lavington.

One of the standout individual performances in Saturday night’s clash against Hawthorn was from eighteen year old Devon Smith.

Smith racked up 26 possessions for the GIANTS in an impressive performance that included four clearances, five inside 50s and four tackles.

Despite the side’s 74 point-loss, Smith said that there were a lot of positives to take out of Saturday’s game for the young side.

“It’s very disappointing to go down by 74 points. The game was very quick; their back men move the ball very well, which made things hard for the forwards.

“Full credit to the boys though – we stuck at it and at no stage did we give up the fight.

“If you haven’t seen it yet, you should know that the GIANTS are going to be competitive all year.

“We’re not going to stop until the final siren goes and that is how our attitude is going to be.”

Smith also praised the efforts of teammate Israel Folau, who kicked his first goal in an AFL standard competition and took a number of impressive marks.

“It’s great for Izzy to get a couple of tackles and kick a goal. We were all pretty happy that he got his first goal.”

“It was another solid hit out and today we have completed our recovery. A lot of our key players didn’t play this week including Callan Ward so we have a lot of strength that will hopefully be back in our side soon.

“It was a very good experience. There is a good vibe around the place and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

The side will now prepare to take on the Gold Coast SUNS in Lavington on Saturday.
