Greater Western Sydney GIANTS co-captain Phil Davis has thanked the club’s supporters in Canberra for getting behind the club during their inaugural year in the AFL.

The GIANTS played their final game in Canberra for 2012 against Melbourne at Manuka Oval last Saturday with Luke Power becoming just the 66th VFL/AFL player to reach 300 games.

The GIANTS have a partnership with the ACT Government to play three home and away and one pre-season match in Canberra each year for the next 10 years.

Davis said while it was disappointing to lose on the weekend, the young club has enjoyed a successful first year in the capital, including their historic first win against the Gold Coast SUNS in Round 7.

“We’ve had some great support all year, the 2012 members in Canberra have been fantastic. It’s a great ground to play at and they have been very vocal and very supportive,” he said.

“If you look at the Gold Coast, they took until this year to win their first home game and we were fortunate enough in Round 7 at Manuka to win our game against the SUNS which was a great thrill.

“On top of that we played Port Adelaide and were able to get a win at SKODA Stadium as well so to win at home is always a much bigger buzz.”

Davis said that while the GIANTS would not return to Manuka to play until next year’s pre-season, the young club would still have a strong presence in Canberra including Australia Post AFL community camp later this year.

“We’ve finished our last game there but for the Canberra GIANTS fans there’s always more to do with our football club.

We’ve got our Brownlow Medal function happening down there in three our four weeks time which will be a great event for footy fans.

The Canberra born defender thanked the GIANTS fans who signed up as members in 2012 and said that he hoped they would continue to support the club in 2013.

“2013 memberships have just gone on sale so hopefully they buy up to make sure that every time we play down in Canberra we get a full house and the support is as good as it has been this year but in more numbers.
