Channel Seven will televise an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary with inner sanctum access on the birth of an AFL club – the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
‘From Boys to Giants’, a one-hour documentary, captures some remarkable stories including the secret trial of rugby league convert Israel Folau, the high-profile recruitment of Tom Scully, as well as the inner workings of the coaching set-up between senior coach Kevin Sheedy and his assistant Mark Williams, and the 2011 draft.
The documentary goes into the stories behind the creation and implementation of the football team featuring interviews with Kevin Sheedy, Mark Williams, Graeme Allan, Stephen Silvagni, CEO Dave Matthews and former CEO Dale Holmes, and Tom and Phil Scully,
In a gripping moment in the documentary Folau says:
“To be honest I didn’t really even take a look at AFL, only because I love league that much and I wanted to play it. But then in the end I just thought I was pretty lucky to play for Queensland and Australia at a young age in league and play in a Grand Final and won a Grand Final.”
AFL Media's Lisa Brougham was granted behind the scenes access and spent several months interviewing players, coaches and administrators involved.
AFL Chief Operating Officer Gillon McLachlan thanked GWS, its players, coaches and administrators for the unprecedented look at the birth of the competition’s 18th club.
“The arrival of the GWS Giants to the national competition will be the AFL’s biggest story of 2012 and we are delighted that Seven will broadcast the story of the beginnings of our newest club.”

The documentary will air on Channel 7 Saturday March 24 at 3.30pm in Melbourne and Adelaide, 1.30pm in Perth and on 7mate at 4.30pm in Sydney and 3.30pm in Brisbane.
