Blacktown International Sportspark will host its first ever AFL premiership match between the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS and the West Coast Eagles this Sunday, April 15.
GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said it would be an historic occasion for the club and the people of Greater Western Sydney.
“There are only 15 other venues in Australia that host AFL premiership matches,” Matthews said.
“This Sunday Blacktown will become the 16th and it will be a very significant moment for the local community.”
Matthews said a crowd of up to 10,000 people was expected to attend the match which would also be televised live across Australia and deliver between $2-3 million in economic benefits to the region.
“As well as watching the GIANTS for the first time, local fans will be able to watch one of the top sides in the competition in the West Coast Eagles and some of the finest stars of the game such as Nic Naitanui.”
Matthews thanked the Blacktown City Council for welcoming the GIANTS and said the club was committed to a long term partnership to deliver a range of benefits to the local community.
“Major events such as AFL premiership matches deliver something tangible to the local community as we have seen in other regions across Australia,” he said.
“We are committed to growing the game across Sydney’s west through elite sporting events like this but also our community programs and partnerships to deliver a range of sporting, economic and social benefits to the local community.”
The Mayor of Blacktown City Council Cr Alan Pendleton said: “The launch of the GWS GIANTS into the AFL is an enormous moment for the people of western Sydney and we are tremendously excited to host the first ever AFL Premiership match at Blacktown this Sunday.”
