The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have made eight inclusions to its 25-man squad ahead of the club’s first game in Melbourne this Sunday against Carlton.
Former Blues forward Setanta O’hAilpin will make his debut for the GIANTS, after coming back from a calf injury with some impressive performances in the NEAFL for the UWS GIANTS.
Watch Kevin Sheedy announce his squad to play Carlton:
Eighteen-year-old Liam Sumner, who was selected by the GIANTS with pick number 10 at the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, will become the 23rd GIANT to make his AFL debut this year.
Recruited from the Sandringham Dragons, the quick midfielder was a member of the AIS/AFL Academy and has won praise for his attack on the contested ball in both the NAB Cup and recently in the NEAFL.
The GIANTS will also be bolstered by the return of some big bodies with Dean Brogan, Tim Mohr, Rhys Palmer, Adam Kennedy, Dom Tyson and Nathan Wilson all named in the extended 25-man squad.
Head Coach Kevin Sheedy said he was looking forward to seeing what O'hAilpin and Sumner could produce in their first games for the GIANTS.
“Why wouldn't we play the big Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin. It's going to be an exciting match for him. He's in the 25 right now, and I must admit, he's got a pretty good chance of playing,” he said.
“We're going to bring Liam Sumner in for his first game. That's yet another first gamer we're blooding and we’re also going to welcome back another four or five.
“From my point of view I'm looking forward to it. I haven't coached against Carlton for a long time. I know they're desperate to keep up in the top four because they've been in pretty good form.
“This will be a great test for our young players. We've thrown in a couple of experienced players to make sure it's a very competitive game and we're really looking forward to it.”
