When the GIANTS run out on Robertson Oval in Wagga Wagga on Saturday night, there will be four young stars with a home grown advantage.
Southern NSW born GIANTS Anthony Miles, Kurt Aylett, Jacob Townsend and Mark Whiley will take the field against the Brisbane Lions in Round 2 of the NAB Cup . All four joined the club as zone selection players in 2011 and have spent the past two years living out their AFL dream.
Tough midfielder Anthony Miles, who turned 21 on Thursday, said that he was proud and excited to be lining up for the GIANTS at Robertson Oval.
"It's great, I can't wait to get out there and the timing has worked out really well with my birthday this week,” he said.
"This is a big game for Wagga Wagga and hopefully we see plenty of support for the club. We had a good win against the Swans last week and hopefully we can put in another strong performance against the Lions.”
There are seven talented youngsters from Southern NSW on the GIANTS' list; Anthony Miles, Sam Schulz, Mark Whiley, Jacob Townsend and Kurt Aylett as well as rookies Joe Refern and Zach Williams.
GIANTS Senior Assistant Coach Leon Cameron said that the club was proud of their connection to the Southern NSW zone and the talent that has emerged from the area is a promising sign for the future of the club.
"To have Anthony Miles, Kurt Aylett, Jacob Townsend, and Mark Whiley all from the Riverina playing this weekend and representing our footy club is great and they’re very much looking forward to strutting their stuff on Saturday night,” Cameron said.
“This is a big event for Wagga and the GIANTS are proud of our partnership with the city which has a great sporting history and we look forward to playing in front a capacity crowd at Robertson Oval.”
