The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have hit 9,000 members as they take the lead over the Gold Coast SUNS in the race to 10,000.
The GIANTS membership now stands at 9,102, ahead of the SUNS who currently have 8,339 members.
Head Coach Kevin Sheedy laid down the challenge to the Suns last month to see which club could be the first to top 10,000 members and SUNS coach Guy McKenna gladly accepted.
The losing coach will have to wear the other club's coloured budgie smugglers on their local beach. The GIANTS signed up more than 10,000 members in their inaugural season in 2012 and are on target to top that in 2013.
Head Coach Kevin Sheedy urged GIANTS fans to sign up as members and help the club win the challenge.
"I've been preparing for this in the gym in case we don't get over the line but it's looking like our members are really getting behind us," Sheedy said.
"I'd say that Bluey will really be starting to shake in his budgie smugglers now that we've got fewer than 900 to go.
"The GIANTS and the SUNS are already building a great rivalry and I’m sure this is only going to grow stronger in the years to come.”
