New recruit Ryan Griffen has started his first day at the GIANTS with a bang, taking out a 3km time trial.

Griffen stormed home to finish ahead of defender Nick Haynes and midfielder Dylan Shiel.

Fellow recruit Joel Patfull and the rest of the GIANTS’ older players returned to the club today, a week and a half after the first-to-fourth year players commenced preparations for 2015.

Griffen arrived in Sydney yesterday afternoon and is staying with co-captain and former Bulldogs teammate Callan Ward while he gets to know his new club.

“It’s been interesting all morning getting to know the boys, and then to come out and do a 3km time trial was pretty nerve-racking but we got through it,” he said.

“I felt good early, probably with two laps to go I was slowing down a fair bit and guys overtook me but I had a little bit in the end and got over the line first.

“I just wanted to come back, get to know the boys and to settle in - as quickly as that happens I’m not sure but hopefully it happens quickly and I can settle right in.”

While not overly enthusiastic about starting his day with a time-trial, Ward was excited to be back into training and said there was a great feeling around the club at this time of the year.

“Day one’s always a tough one so to get that time trial over and done with, I’m pretty relieved,” Ward said.

“It’s a good feeling amongst the boys, I think all the young boys have trained really well over the first two weeks so it’s good to come back.”
