GIANT Steele
Canberra youngster Jack Steele has become the first ACT player to be drafted to the club through the PM Capital GIANTS Academy.
Steele bounced back from a knee injury in 2013 to be selected in the Under-18 All Australian side following an outstanding NAB AFL Championships with the NSW ACT-Rams, for whom he was named the most valuable player.
The 186cm prospect, who is capable of playing both midfield and forward, told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday he was ecstatic to be recruited by the GIANTS.
"It's pretty exciting to be on an AFL list and to go to the GIANTS," Steele said.
"It's close to home and I know the club so I'm happy to go there."
The GIANTS confirmed they would select Steele last Thursday when coach Leon Cameron and list manager Stephen Silvagni spoke to the youngster at Etihad Stadium.
They were forced to use pick 23 at the father-son and academy bidding meeting after North Melbourne bid its pick 15 for the 18-year-old.
"I had a couple of interviews with North," Steele said.
"I never thought they were that interested, but I guess they were. It was pretty surprising."
Steele put in an impressive display at the NAB AFL Draft Combine last week, finishing in the top 10 in a number of tests.
He ran 10 mins 11 secs in the 3km time trial and backed that up with 15.1 in the beep test.
Steele said he had set himself to put in a strong showing in the testing.
"I just saw it as another opportunity to put my name out there and get drafted as high as possible," he said.
"I went out there with that mindset and was able to get some good results."
