The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS can confirm that young midfielder Paul Ahern will require a second knee reconstruction after re-ruptured his ACL at training today. 

The 20-year old underwent scans this afternoon and will undergo surgery on his right knee in the coming weeks. 

Ahern had a knee reconstruction in February this year and returned to full training just last month.

GIANTS General Manager Football Wayne Campbell said: “We’re all obviously devastated for Paul who’s worked extremely hard during his most recent period of rehabilitation.

“We’ll now look to determine the best course of action for Paul going forward with his long-term welfare our first priority.”

Ahern was selected with pick 7 at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

Separately, the GIANTS also confirmed today that midfielder Jack Steele has suffered a season-ending foot injury.

Steele injured himself at training on Tuesday and subsequent scans have ruled him out for the remainder of 2016.

The 20-year old will consult a specialist this week to establish a rehabilitation plan.

Despite not playing AFL football since fracturing his hand in the GIANTS’ round 17 win over the Brisbane Lions, Steele has been in outstanding form in the NEAFL lately, helping the WSU GIANTS secure a place in Sunday's NEAFL Grand Final against the Sydney Swans Reserves.

GIANTS Coach Leon Cameron said: "We're feeling for Jack at the moment because he was on the verge of possibly playing AFL footy this week, if not, he was going to play in the NEAFL Grand Final on Sunday.

"He's been in really good form and knocking on the door, but it looks like he's not going participate in any more footy this year unfortunately. 

"Outside this injury setback we're really excited with where Jack’s heading with his football, and he's absolutely a wanted player at our footy club going forward.”
