It took a little longer than he would have liked due to the coronavirus shut down, but Callan Ward will officially make his AFL return when the GIANTS take on the Kangaroos on Sunday.
Coach Leon Cameron announced that Ward would return to an overjoyed playing group on Thursday morning, ahead of the team’s main training session at GIANTS Stadium.
The heart and soul of the club, Ward was back to his combative best with a blistering performance in last weekend’s intra-club match that made it impossible for the coach not to pick him.
The former skipper was heartbroken when he tore the ACL in his left knee against Geelong in round four, 2019 and after more than a year on the sidelines the footy world will finally get to see him back on the field.
Ward welcomed his first son with wife Ruby in January with Romeo getting to see his Dad do what he loves again this weekend.
It’s a big week for the club with Ward sharing his return for former fellow skipper Phil Davis who is set to play his 150th game for the club, earning him life membership.
Keep your eye on the GIANTS channels in the next 48 hours with plenty of coverage of Ward’s journey back to the big time.
The squad of 26 for Sunday’s game will be named at 6:20pm on Thursday with the final 22 confirmed at 5pm on Friday.
The GIANTS take on the Kangaroos at 1:05pm on Sunday with live coverage on Fox Footy and the Seven Network across the country.
