Eastlake proved too strong for the UWS GIANTS, running out 18 point winners in their NEAFL clash at Manuka Oval on Saturday.

The GIANTS got away to a flying start as they consistently won clearances and pushed the ball forward. Draftee Liam Sumner’s run in the midfield and clean disposal helped set up a number of goals for his teammates and opened up a 11 point lead at quarter time.

But as they did for the seniors, turnovers proved costly for the GIANTS, particularly late in the second quarter with Eastlake making the most of their scoring opportunities.

Led by Josh Bruce's brother Aaron, who booted seven goals, Eastlake overpowered the young GIANTS side, kicking 11 goals to seven after quarter time.

After an interrupted pre-season because of injury, Setanta O'hAilpin continued his good recent form, booting three goals and showing he is not far from senior selection.

Draftee Nick Haynes also pushed his claims for senior selection with three goals in an impressive performance and another young midfielder Dom Tyson was also prominent booting two goals.

UWS GIANTS Coach Brett Hand said that while the coaching staff was disappointed with the result, there were a number of promising signs from yesterday’s game.

“We had our chances in the second quarter but Eastlake had much bigger bodies on the ground and they used that to their advantage. We were impressed with Andrew Phillips, who dominated the ruck contest and provided a marking option around the ground," Hand said.

“Setanta O’hAilpin was impressive up forward and provided us with some strength around the ground while Dom Tyson, Sam Schulz and Nick Haynes all worked hard around the ground.”

The loss left the UWS GIANTS sitting sixth on the ladder with two wins after five games. They have a bye next week.
