A best on ground performance by midfielder Jonathan O’Rourke has helped the UWS GIANTS to a 126-point victory in the NEAFL match against Queanbeyan on Sunday.

The GIANTS had a dream start booting the first goal in the opening seconds of the match before scoring six more for the term to make it seven goals to two at the first change.

The GIANTS took a 56-point lead into the main break, returning to score twelve goals in the third term before sailing home in the final term.

UWS GIANTS Coach Brett Hand said he was pleased with his sides stand-out performance.
“It was great to secure another win and the boys really earned it. We got off to a solid start and it paid off in the end,” said Hand.

“Our contested ball use was very good and our ability to punish the opposition on turnover was a key to the win.

“The Tigers took it up to us in the second half, but we were able to withstand the pressure with some good ball use and run from the back line providing our forwards with some good goal-scoring opportunities.

“Our forwards worked hard up the ground creating space for others to run into allowing an even spread of thirteen goal scorers for the day."
2012 number two draft pick Jono O'Rourke was named best afield as he continues to push to make his AFL debut.

“O'Rourke was excellent running off half back and later on ball.

"Nathan Wilson and Gerald Ugle were lively up forward creating shots on goal, and Kurt Aylett was very good at utilising his running capacity to win the ball and kick two goals.”

GIANTS co-captain Phil Davis made his return, playing his first game since injuring his back in late April.

“Phil played the first half in the back line and his leadership was excellent directing our young back line before being rested in the second half,” Hand said.

“He provided a couple of good intercept marks and good use of the ball pushing forward to kick a goal late in the second quarter.”

The UWS GIANTS play Tuggeranong at StarTrack Oval Canberra this Saturday in the curtain raiser to the GWS GIANTS v Western Bulldogs Prime Ministers Cup clash in the Cbus Building Australia tribute game.
