2015 may only be a week old but the GIANTS can't wait for the season to start.
That’s the message from Devon Smith as the GIANTS completed another gruelling training session in the scorching Western Sydney heat.
Smith, who finished equal-second in the Kevin Sheedy Medal last year, said there’s never been a better time to be part of the club.
“GIANTS members jump on, if you get on now you can say you’ve been there since the start. We’re building something pretty special here,” he said.
“It’s really exciting. Ryan Griffen, Joel Patfull, these senior guys have come in and they’re going to play a massive role for us.
“Not only that, it’s our fourth year and a lot of the boys have played 50 games now. We’re not kids any more, we’re ready for the big time and we can’t wait.”
The GIANTS endured an intense three-hour session at Tom Wills Oval on Friday morning as the mercury climbed into the high-30s.
“It was another hot day out here, we’re just getting back into it after a nice Christmas break,” Smith said.
“Monday we had our big 3km, Wednesday we did a bit of repeat speed and today’s a bit more of an aerobic focus.
“I don’t know how far we did, it would have been over 10km though and it’s probably 36 degrees. It’s very humid here at the moment so it was a solid hit out.”
Co-captain Callan Ward said training has stepped up another notch this pre-season.
“It’s been 10 minutes and I’m still blowing, that was so tough out there,” Ward said.
“It’s starting to get into more football stuff at this time of the year and at the end we did plenty of running and that’s what gets me.
“I actually love training in the heat, I think it adds so much and I think the boys work harder in the heat.”
Ward echoed Smith’s sentiments and encouraged fans to join more than 5,000 people already signed up as GIANTS members for 2015.
“We can almost smell the games now. The boys love this time of year, training hard, it’s nice and hot for us.
“The feeling’s been terrific since the break and everyone’s up with heaps of energy.
“It’s our fourth year now, we’ve got these third and fourth year players who are really ready to step up.
“We’ve got some new recruits who have plenty of experience in Ryan Griffen and Joel Patfull and plenty of new young draftees so I think we’re really ready to take off again this year.”
