In the lead up to the GIANTS' clash with Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, we’ve examined some of the key components that could influence the match.
Finals Factor - Coach Leon Cameron said finals start this week for the GIANTS who are desperately trying to clinch a top eight spot. Sitting 10th on 40 points, expect the GIANTS to be extra hungry for a win on Saturday afternoon. Whilst it’s still mathematically possible for Port Adelaide to make the finals, it would be highly unlikely for them to compete post-season. Currently they’re sitting 12th on 32 points, two games behind the GIANTS.
General in Charge - Key forward Jon Patton made his long-awaited return last week against Essendon at Spotless Stadium and although he didn’t manage to kick a goal he provided an extra target up front. Last time the sides met Jon Patton slotted two majors and took six marks. The GIANTS’ forward trio of Jeremy Cameron, Jon Patton and Cam McCarthy are yet to start a match together in attack. Could this be the week?
Crucial Accuracy - Port Adelaide are the most accurate team in front of goal this season, kicking 234 goals and 169 behinds at 54.8 per cent. On the other end of the scale the Giants have struggled, ranked 17th in the competition at just 46 per cent (218 goals, 221 behinds). Port Adelaide’s highest goal scorer, Chad Wingard (44 goals) is kicking at 60 per cent while GIANTS star Jeremy Cameron (48) is kicking at 56 per cent.
Clearance Carnage - Ranked third in the league for clearances (averaging 42 per match) Port Adelaide could have an advantage over the GIANTS who are ranked 13th (averaging 37). Doing most of the damage is Robbie Gray who averages 8 clearances per match which is the second most in the league. GIANTS co-captain Callan Ward averages six per match, ranking him 18th.
Power Portress - This is just the second time the GIANTS have travelled to Adelaide Oval after losing to Adelaide by 65 points in 2014. Port Adelaide have had mixed experiences at home this season, winning five games but also losing four. The GIANTS will train on Adelaide Oval on Friday afternoon to familiarise themselves with the ground conditions.
Last Time We Met - When the two sides last met in Round 7, 2014 it was Port Adelaide who won bragging rights, getting across the line by 35 points. GIANTS co-captain Callan Ward was exceptional, accumulating 40 touches, 11 marks and eight tackles. Devon Smith kicked three goals but it was Jared Polec who was given the three Brownlow votes.
The GIANTS take on Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval at 4.35pm (EST) on Saturday with live coverage on 7mate in NSW and the ACT and Fox Footy from 4.30pm.
