Number one draft pick Tom Boyd booted three goals for the UWS GIANTS in their 27-point win over an ACT Under-23 team.

In slippery conditions at Ainslie Oval in Canberra, Boyd kicked the first two goals of the game in an impressive performance for his first outing for the GIANTS.

The rain held off but it was a tight and scrappy contest with the UWS GIANTS dominating in the ruck and using the ball well.

NEAFL Coach Brett Hand said he was pleased with the performance.

“When we were able to get the ball in space we played some good football,” Hand said.

“There were plenty of options going forward and our tackling and forward pressure was very good.”

2013 draftee Jake Barrett also starred with his run and ability to find the ball in space.

Boyd ended the game with three goals from seven shots while James Stewart and Liam Sumner were lively up forward.

Aidan Corr and Kristian Jaksch were solid in defence against the ACT representative side coached by former GIANTS Head Coach Kevin Sheedy.

Though pleased with the dominance of Andrew Phillips, Rory Lobb and Tom Downie in the ruck, Hand said the clearances were an area for improvement.

“Our stoppage work was disappointing, especially after winning the hit-outs,” Hand said.

“But it was great to see Andrew Phillips get through three good quarters of football, returning from his hamstring injury where he didn't play a game at all last year.”

The UWS GIANTS will play a practice match against the Sydney Hills Eagles at 10am next Saturday, March 8 at Tom Wills Oval in Sydney Olympic Park.
