Fearless midfielder Jacob Townsend has continued his impressive form in the NEAFL with another best on ground performance on Sunday.
Townsend, who has been named among the best players for the last three matches, was again dominant in the UWS GIANTS’ 110-point win over Redland at Spotless Stadium.
Besides a slight lapse in the third term, the UWS GIANTS were rarely troubled by their Queensland opponents, dominating the disposal count 398-272.
UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand praised Townsend for his work around stoppages and ability to win the contested ball.
“Jacob was outstanding for us and was probably our best player despite missing the last term after suffering a heavy knock,” Hand said.
“He’s had a good month on the park and he keeps putting his hand up with solid performances.
“I thought we were really good for the bulk of the match and responded well in the final quarter by keeping them scoreless.
“It was also good to see a range of goal kickers share the load up forward with Jon Patton and Cam McCarthy elevated to the seniors.”
Hand also said defender Adam Kennedy was reliable down back while midfielder Jake Barrett was prolific with 38 touches.
Young midfielder Jack Steele responded well after being omitted from the senior side, finishing the game with 35 touches, six marks and six tackles.
Likewise Jed Lamb didn’t miss a beat, adding to his NEAFL goal tally with a five-goal performance.
The highlight of the match came in the final term with Curtly Hampton running from half back to finish a chain of GIANTS passes with a classy goal.
UWS GIANTS have a bye this weekend before a crunch match against Swans reserves at Spotless Stadium to secure top spot on the NEAFL ladder.
“We’ll train this weekend but will also try and freshen up some of our players with finals just a few weeks away,” Hand said.
The match will be played as a curtain raiser to GIANTS v Sydney at 2.10pm on August 22.
