Four last quarter goals helped the WSU GIANTS claim a 17-point victory over Sydney University in their round 13 NEAFL clash at Spotless Stadium.
Neither side was able to open up a substantial lead throughout the game, with Sydney University hitting the front early in the last quarter before goals to Matthew Flynn, James Stewart and Sam Reid put the game out of reach for the GIANTS.
Defender Adam Kennedy and small forward Devon Smith both made successful returns from injury in the match that saw the GIANTS field 14 AFL listed players.
GIANTS NEAFL coach Brad Miller was pleased with the side’s work rate throughout and highlighted the importance of the club’s leaders standing up in the contest.
“Adding the experience of guys like Sam Reid our captain and with Devon Smith playing the second half gives the morale of the group a real lift and what they do around the footy is crucial,” Miller said.
“We base our game on contested footy which forces the game into a bit of a contest, but I think it’s great for the young guys development over the long term to keep playing this style of football.
“They took away our ball movement early in the game and I just don’t think we adjusted quick enough so we couldn’t really shake them off.
“As the game wore on though we started to adjust it a little bit and become smarter and it did end up going more our way, particularity in the last quarter.”
Tall forward James Stewart (four goals) and Adam Tomlinson (three goals) proved to be the difference in the 13.15 (93) to 11.10 (76) victory, with midfielder Jack Steele continuing to push for AFL selection finishing the match with 37 disposals.
“I thought James started the game really well and looked like the most dangerous forward on the ground early,” Miller said.
“For Tommo (Tomlinson) to go forward late in the game and use his marking and strength in contests to be able to capitalise and kick three goals was a great reward.”
The win sees the GIANTS move up to third on the NEAFL ladder ahead of this week’s bye, before taking on Southport on Saturday July 9 at Spotless Stadium.
