The Auburn GIANTS will play a curtain closer at Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon as part of the celebrations of the 2016 Toyota AFL Multicultural Round.
The Auburn GIANTS team includes a number of Muslim women from diverse cultural backgrounds and were the first women’s AFL team in Western Sydney.
Auburn will take on Macquarie University in round 11 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division straight after the GIANTS’ main game against Collingwood.
It’s not the first time the Auburn girls have played on Spotless Stadium after two curtain raisers in previous seasons. Last season they also played a historic curtain-raiser at the MCG thanks to their major partner Harvey Norman.
Harvey Norman is also the proud match day partner of the GIANTS’ Multicultural Round match.
The Auburn GIANTS were formed in 2011 as the Auburn Tigers and play in the Sydney Women’s AFL competition. They changed their name and colours to the GIANTS at the beginning of 2014.
Harvey Norman was announced as the major sponsor of the Auburn GIANTS in March 2015, the first time the company has been involved in AFL.
The number of women playing AFL in NSW has increased by 400 per cent since 2011 to more than 60,000 across the state.
The GIANTS were recently named as one of eight AFL clubs to be granted a licence to field a team in the inaugural National Women’s League starting next season.
There’ll be heaps of fun and festivities in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday with the Auburn GIANTS rounding off a huge day of celebrations.
Be prepared for the extraordinary as we celebrate the many cultures that make this great game special, kicking off with the AFL Multicultural Festival presented by Australia Post in Cathy Freeman Park outside Spotless Stadium from 11am-7pm.
This free event offers rides, food stalls, AFL clinics, henna and face painters, Multicultural workshops, Arabic Drummers, Bollywood dancing plus a live performance from Justice Crew.
There’s also the NEAFL clash between the WSU GIANTS and Southport starting at 10am inside Spotless Stadium before the main game between the GIANTS and Collingwood kicks off at 1.40pm.
Straight after kick to kick stick around for the Auburn GIANTS v Macquarie University women’s clash which is scheduled to begin at 5.10pm.
