The GIANTS have nine picks at their disposal going into the 2019 NAB AFL Women's Draft next Tuesday, including a compensation pick following off-season departures to the AFL Women’s expansion teams.

After welcoming two new teams in 2019, the AFLW competition expands again in 2020, with the introduction of four new teams: Gold Coast, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast.

The new additions take the total number of teams in the competition to 14.

With the new teams and a host of picks at the GIANTS’ disposal, we take a look at Tuesday’s draft.

How It Works

Unlike the men’s competition, the AFLW Draft is not a true national draft, but rather a state-based draft system.

Prospective players must nominate only one state pool they wish to be assigned to ahead of the draft.

As the GIANTS are the only New South Wales team, the club has access to players who have nominated for the New South Wales pool, meaning the draft order has less impact on who the GIANTS can select compared to clubs in other states that have more than one team.

Players who nominate for the Victorian draft pools can either select the Victorian draft (all Victorian clubs), Melbourne Metro (city-based clubs) and Geelong.

Representatives from all 14 AFLW clubs will be at the Melbourne Showgrounds for the draft, which begins at 10:30am on October 22.

The GIANTS’ Picks

The GIANTS enter the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft with nine picks: 4, 23, 29, 61, 76, 90, 95, 97 and 99.

GIANTS Changes Since Last Season

The GIANTS re-signed a swathe of 2019 players back in April, with 21 players recommitting for the 2020 season.

Former AFL Players MVP Courtney Gum retired at the end of the 2019 season but recently nominated for the South Australian draft pool, while Emma Swanson, Maddy Collier (both West Coast), Phoebe Monahan and Christina Bernardi (both Richmond) joined new expansion clubs.

During the signing and trade period, the GIANTS secured promising ruck Jessica Allen in a trade with Adelaide, which saw the GIANTS part with pick 46 while Britt Tully re-signed after stepping away from football during the 2019 AFL Season.
