Star forward Jeremy Cameron has strained his hamstring and is expected to miss the next three weeks.
Cameron experienced tightness in his hamstring and was rested for a fortnight before making his return in the GIANTS’ win over Fremantle at Spotless Stadium on the weekend.
GIANTS Head of Athletic Performance David Joyce said there was no specific incident that led to the injury.
“He got a hit in his back in the second quarter and felt some symptoms down that leg,” he said.
“He tested really well throughout the second half. We went out repeatedly just to check on him and he was fine. We specifically tested him at three-quarter time and he was fine.
“He actually presented worse post match so we scanned him and unfortunately it’s revealed he’s got a hamstring strain. It’s a grade two which means three weeks.”
Joyce said that Cameron had prepared well for the game and had passed all the required fitness tests ahead of his recall.
“There’s no reason why he shouldn’t have played the game, he was absolutely fine to go into the game,” Joyce said.
“He couldn’t have been more prepared. He wasn’t rushed back, it was just one of those unfortunate things.”
Second-gamer Will Setterfield faces a fitness test later this week after suffering a concussion following a heavy knock during the third quarter of Saturday’s 12-point win.
Ruckman Shane Mumford will be put to the test to see if he has recovered from an ankle injury that kept him sidelined over the weekend.
Veteran forward Steve Johnson will also be put through his paces later in the week as he aims to prove his fitness and push for a return against Melbourne in Canberra this Saturday.
Meanwhile midfielder Jacob Hopper made a successful return in the NEAFL on Saturday night, playing three quarters and collecting 22 disposals as the GIANTS Reserves lost to Gold Coast by 31 points.
GIANTS NEAFL Coach Brad Miller was impressed with the 20-year-old’s performance after 10 weeks on the side-lines with hand and ankle injuries. Click heree to see what Miller had to say in this week’s NEAFL report.
Forward Sam Reid is expected to remain on the sidelines for a further two to three weeks with an ankle injury.
