The GIANTS’ AFL Women’s squad has completed its first intra-club practice match as the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s competition draws closer.
The match saw the GIANTS players separated into two sides as players vied to catch the eye of coach Tim Schmidt with just 22 days until their first match against the Adelaide Crows on Saturday, February 4.
21 of the club’s 28 listed players took the field at Tom Wills Oval in Sydney Olympic Park with 16 on each side, replicating the amount of players on the field in the NAB AFL Women’s competition.
Members of the club’s train on squad and Academy made up the remainder of the players.
The teams were split evenly with each side made up of listed, train on and Academy players before the final quarter where the listed players had their first run as a team.
In sweltering conditions, the two teams played four 15-minute quarters with no time on, a slight adjustment on the 15-minute quarters, including time on, that will be in effect once competition begins.
The GIANTS will have one practice match against the Brisbane Lions before their season opener in South Australia on February 4.
